Basic

A spelling and grammar check service

Intended for already well-written work accepted for publication pending final grammar checks.

Our Basic service is offered as a budget option for cases where a manuscript text is already well written. Unlike our Standard or Premium services, this level of editing does not include sentence-level changes; that is, our editors will correct any grammatical or spelling errors they find, but if the text requires more work to read clearly, then this is not included. Papers are only accepted for this service subject to a prior reading for approval; if we believe your text requires more editing, then we will send you a quote for our Standard service, because we want to ensure you are paying for the most suitable editing package.

Manuscripts submitted for our Standard Editing package benefit from an additional round of editing for minor revisions free of charge. This includes minor changes made to sentences we edit in the first round of editing, as well as new sentences added, with an allowance of up 10% of the original word count paid for. New text exceeding this amount is charged for at the standard rate. This service is intended to allow authors to check our editing, make further adjustments and ask questions if necessary, and then have these changes checked before the work is finally submitted for publication. If a manuscript is completely re-written and requires editing again throughout, this can be offered at a substantial discount.
Our most popular Standard Editing service focuses on the kind of comprehensive, subject-specific editing we have excelled at for over 20 years. Your work is first edited by a PhD-qualified scientific editor who is familiar with your area of research. They will edit the text to ensure it is clear, concise and accurate, while taking care not to change your intended meaning. If they need to ask questions or provide feedback, then comments will be left in the margin for your attention. Your paper is then checked again by a grammar specialist English graduate proofreader, who will check the editor's work, look for any outstanding errors, and make further improvements to ensure your work is well presented and uses natural sounding English expression. Finally, you can review our changes, make further adjustments if required, and then send the work back to us a second time to check your revisions free of charge! (conditions apply)

If a manuscript is completely re-written and requires editing again throughout, this can be offered at a substantial discount.
Our Premium service begins with the same comprehensive edit offered by our Standard service; your text is carefully edited by a PhD-qualified editor who is familiar with your field, and is then checked a second time by a grammar specialist English graduate. Unlike our Standard package, Premium service papers benefit from additional rounds of checking for revisions free of charge, making it ideal for papers requiring extensive work. In addition, our editors will review your tables and figures and ensure the data is accurately reported in your results. If you need help with reducing the word count of your paper, we can help make your text more concise, and identify sections you may consider omitting (on request). Lastly, just as a little extra, if you have a cover letter prepared, then we'll edit it at no extra charge!

What happens next?

You will be invited to create a Bioedit account if you do not have one already. Then, you can securely upload your file(s) and confirm the details of your request. We will then review your request, and send you a formal quote. You can then decide whether you would like to proceed with the work and confirm your preferred payment method, or you can amend/cancel your request. 

How is the price calculated?

Unlike many other editing services, Bioedit charged on a per word basis, meaning you are charged exactly for the amount of text we are asked to check. The rate per word is determined by the editing service level and turnaround speed you request.

Importantly, we only include text that we might edit in your quote, so reference lists, table data, title page details etc. are not included. If you would like us to only edit certain sections of your paper, you can request this also.

Table and figure titles and legends are included in the word count unless you specifically ask us not to include them. Only text that appears in MS Word files can be included, and the text must be in an editable format (i.e., not embedded in images).

What sort of documents can I send?

Although our services are designed for research manuscripts in the medical and life sciences, we can help you with other kinds of documents related to your work. Grant applications, reviewer response/rebuttal letters, cover letters, CVs/resumes, product leaflets, book chapters, and research proposals are just a few of the document types we are happy to edit. These are all charged on a per word basis in the same manner. 

How can I make payment?

Bioedit accepts payment by all major credit cards, through our secure checkout provided by WorldPay. Users in China can also make payment by Alipay, UnionPay, or WeChat.

Bank transfer payments are also accepted pending your acceptance of the quote we send to you.

Users wishing to pay by KAKENHI can do so via our partner company in Japan, SD Biosystem.

What other services do you provide?

At the next step, you will be able to choose from our add-on services, including Pre-Peer Review (to give you an extra level of feedback from our editors) and Journal Selection (which helps you to decide on an appropriate journal to submit your paper to). Plagiarism Check provides a scan of your manuscript to check potential instances of plagiarism or overlap with previously published work. Lastly, our Write My Cover Letter! includes a drafted cover letter suitable to accompany your submission to the journal. These are charged for on a fixed price basis. 

Can I make a deposit for future editing services?

Yes! We understand that researchers often wish to allocate a portion of their annual grants to publication and editing services. Many of the authors we work with make a deposit with us and then claim from this deposit at a later date. Please contact us for further information or to arrange a deposit with us.
