His main research interests included interactions between plants and pathogens, including the physiology of diseased plants and plant resistance to fungal pathogens. He was awarded a DSc for his research on plant-pathogen interactions by Lancaster University in 1999. Dale has published more than 180 peer-reviewed publications, four edited books and two textbooks. He has supervised 28 PhD students and numerous undergraduate projects. His teaching at undergraduate level included courses on plant pathology, plant biotic interactions, and plant responses to stress. He has edited scientific journals since 1990 and has been Senior Editor of Physiological and Molecular Plant Pathology, Associate Editor of European Journal of Plant Pathology and was on the editorial board of Mycological Research. He is currently Associate Editor of Journal of Phytopathology. Dale retired in February 2016 and is now Emeritus Professor of Plant Pathology.
