Dr. Paul Sanfilippo

Dr Paul Sanfilippo is an early career scientist, having completed his PhD through the University of Melbourne in 2012. He initially trained as an optometrist, subsequently working in a glaucoma/retina subspecialty ophthalmology practice. Paul used data from two large Australian twin studies to examine heritable features of optic disc morphology, specifically the shape. He applied techniques from the discipline of biological shape analysis (geometric morphometrics) to characterize and quantify the shape variation in the optic cup and disc, and estimate the degree that genetic factors influence these parameters. In his post-doctoral work, Paul has continued to investigate the variation in optic nerve head morphology and its association with eye disease. He has authored over 35 peer-reviewed scientific articles and is concurrently completing a Masters of Biostatistics.
